On 1 April 1965 Malta’s Territorial Force became the Malta Land Force and initially comprised of the 3rd Light AD RMA, 11th Light AD RMA and the
1st Battalion KOMR. The General Officer Commanding Malta and Libya was appointed Commander MLF.
Brigadier GV Micallef
In 1967 a Maltese Officer was appointed for the first time as Commander of the Malta Land Force, when Brigadier GV Micallef was handed over the command of the MLF by Major General Leakey.

500 officers and men from the Royal Malta Artillery took their oath of allegiance and were enlisted in the Malta Land Force (MLF) on 1st October 1970. The Royal Engineers (Malta) and the Royal Signals (Malta) were also disbanded that same day together with their artillery counterparts who were all given the option to join the MLF.
